Born on a chairlift

Like many great brands, Skullcandy was born out of a problem. Their founder, Rick Alden, was riding a chairlift in Park City, Utah. He was listening to music, but needed to take a call. Of course, technology at the time made it impossible to switch from his music player to his phone. So Rick decided that the world needed a better solution. He’d start a company that would not only make a better headphone, but also make it fit the snowboarding lifestyle.

​That was the moment when Skullcandy became the original audio lifestyle brand. And they’ve never looked back.

Fighting climate change 1,000,000 pounds at a time

Skullcandy like to think their products never die. OK, maybe they do — but they should never, ever be buried in a landfill. So, Skullcandy partnered with facilities around the globe to recycle and upcycle Skullcandy products for resale. Their goal is to keep 1,000,000 pounds of waste from entering landfills by the end of 2025. Sound like a lot? It is, but they’re already well on their way.

Once a Skullcandy product arrives at our recycling facility, it’s officially on its RePlay journey. It will undergo a thorough inspection to determine whether it can be upcycled or if it needs to be broken down and properly recycled. If possible, it will be refurbished and resold, with a portion of the proceeds going to Skullcandy’s friends at Protect Our Winters.

LEAN and green manufacturing

The implementation of LEAN processes has increased Skullcandy’s manufacturing efficiency dramatically. This increase in efficiency comes with a reduction in the amount of energy they use and the amount of waste we produce. LEAN processes have also increased their transportation efficiency, which reduces the amount of fuel they consume and the amount of air pollution they produce.

With the help of EcoChain®, Skullcandy measure and assess the ecological impact of their processes and individual products. One area they recognised an opportunity for improvement was their earbud batteries. Starting with Dime® earbuds, they’re using smaller, more efficient batteries. As a result, Dime’s carbon footprint is less than half​ that of other true wireless earbuds.
